6 Ways to Stay on Budget for Christmas

Christmas is a known expense, not an emergency, and should be budgeted for in advance. Here are 5 ways to stay on budget while shopping for Christmas.

🎁 6 Ways to Stay on Budget for Christmas

1. Create a Zero-Based Christmas Budget:

First, decide on the total amount you can afford to spend without going into debt.

Make a detailed list of everyone you plan to buy a gift for and all other holiday expenses (food, decor, travel, parties, etc.).

Assign a dollar amount next to every single name and expense.

Ensure your planned spending equals the total amount you can afford (a zero-based budget).

2. Pay Cash for Everything:

Following the zero-based budget, put the total amount of money in an envelope (or a separate bank account dedicated only to Christmas funds).

Only spend the cash you have set aside. When the cash is gone, the spending stops.

Do not use credit cards or “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) programs, as this is debt and a major no-no in a good financial plan.

3. Track Your Spending as You Go:

As you buy gifts and incur other holiday costs, immediately track the actual amount spent against your budget lines.

If you overspend on one person or category, you must adjust by spending less on another person or category to stay within your total budget.

4. Communicate and Adjust Expectations:

If you’re short on cash, talk to your family about spending expectations.

Consider money-saving alternatives like drawing names (Secret Santa) instead of buying for everyone, setting a firm price limit, giving homemade gifts or experiences instead of store-bought items.

You have nothing to prove to anyone with expensive gifts.

5. Start Saving Money Throughout the Year:

For the following year, set up a “sinking fund” for Christmas. This involves dividing your total estimated Christmas budget by 12 and saving that amount monthly into a dedicated savings fund.

This eliminates the financial stress when the holidays arrive and ensures you pay for Christmas with cash you’ve already saved.

6. Buy your gifts when on sale:

Black friday and cyber Monday are around the corner. Start putting gifts in your wish list and purchase them when you see prices are lower.

7. Enjoy the gift of giving without the regret:

Take these steps and enjoy giving to family, friends and charity without the massive hangover that millions feel when they receive their statements in January.
